The Numbers Minefield
When was the last time you tried to navigate your way around the numbers minefield?
Do you have any idea how much it now costs to dial an 0845 or an 0870 number?
If not, you’re not alone!
IN THE OLD DAYS…
Until a few years ago 0845 numbers were called “Local Rate” numbers, and 0870 numbers were “National Rate”. However that wasn’t really a true reflection of their call costs as the rate charged for dialling these numbers was generally much higher than the cost of a local or national geographic call.
In 2015 Ofcom decided to make life simpler by changing the rules. It could now cost anything up to 13p per minute to dial an 084 or 087 number but the company advertising the number had to ensure that the cost of the call was clearly stated on any marketing material and/or website. Here’s a current example, taken from the National Express website:
Not really much simpler to be honest, especially as you now have to find out what your phone company’s access charge is in order to be certain of the cost of the call. It doesn’t really make you want to ring them, does it?
WHAT NUMBER TYPE TO CHOOSE?
It’s fair to say that many people are now understandably wary of dialling 084 and 087 numbers. If you are a company looking to set up a non-geographic number for people to ring you on, our advice would be to steer clear of the 084 and 087 number types and instead opt for either an 0800/0808 (freephone) or an 03 (national non-geographic) number.
One good thing that has come out of the Ofcom number shakeup is that making calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers is now truly free, from both UK landlines and UK mobiles. Hooray!
It will cost to receive calls from freephone numbers, but many companies feel that it is worth it if it helps persuade existing or potential customers to get in touch with them.
You will no doubt have seen these numbers popping up all the place in the last couple of years, and they are now well recognised. They should always cost the caller the same as dialling a UK geographic (01 or 02) number, and as such they have become widely accepted by many callers.
We can offer all of these number types, as well as geographic numbers from all over the UK (regardless of where your office is physically located). Want to know more? Please get in touch – we love talking telecoms and would love to hear from you!
