Farewell to ISDN
There’s no getting away from it: ISDN services are due to be switched off in 2025. Although this may still seem like some way off, BT have advised that they will be reducing their investment in this technology during the phasing out period, meaning that the service is likely to become less reliable as time goes on.
So if you are one of the thousands of companies still using ISDN, what should you do? Firstly, don’t panic! There are a number of future-proof alternatives out there which offer more resilience and flexibility and are in many cases cheaper than ISDN. It is important to note that whichever route you want to take, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is going to be the medium over which your calls are carried. This means replacing “traditional” lines, such as ISDN, with virtual lines using broadband or other Ethernet connectivity. (And in fact, the majority of voice calls are already being carried over IP for at least part of their journey.)
There are two ways of achieving this leap forward:
1) Hosted IP Telephony
With Hosted telephony, all of the technology sits in the cloud so there is no need for expensive on-premises equipment. You can opt to have a phone on your desk or instead use a softphone connected to your PC. Hosted telephony comes with many features included as standard, meaning that even a small SoHo can access the features (voicemail, call divert etc) that were once only available to large companies with deep pockets! What’s more, it is very quick and easy to upscale or downscale depending on the changing needs of your company
2) SIP Trunks
Now well-established in the market, SIP trunking enables a company to make use of IP technology whilst still retaining an on-premises telephone system. Compared to ISDN, SIP trunks are cheaper on a per-channel basis and more flexible in terms of the telephone numbers you can have and the locations in which you can have them. Your existing ISDN numbers can normally be ported onto your SIP trunks even if you are moving to a different part of the country. In addition, they are much quicker to install and offer a robust business continuity service to ensure your business never loses any calls.
